With over 20 years of experience, Maumoon frequently advises and represents international banks, financial institutions, multinational corporations, and domestic enterprises on a broad range of complex corporate and commercial transactions. He is particularly accomplished in advising foreign investors on regulatory issues related to investments in the Maldives and also advises on various employment law issues, including employment contracts, compliance issues and termination of employees.
In his criminal defense practice, Maumoon has represented prominent public figures in criminal proceedings at the superior and appellate courts. Before entering private practice, he held key roles at the Attorney General’s Office, including Head of Prosecutions and Head of Legal Reform, and prior to that, served as the Legal Counsel to the Maldives Police Service.
Maumoon has extensive experience in legislative drafting. He drafted the “Police Bill” and oversaw the drafting of the “Criminal Procedure Code Bill”. He was also a member of the Core Group of Experts that assisted in drafting the “Penal Code Amendment Bill” . After entering private practice, he drafted the “Juvenile Justice Bill” in 2011 for the Juvenile Justice Unit at the Ministry of Home Affairs.
With the establishment of the Bar Council of the Maldives in 2019 following the enactment of the Legal Profession Act, Maumoon was elected as the first President of the Bar Council, serving from 2019 to 2022.
